Before you start fretting that this is yet another food blog event, not to worry. Don’t get me wrong, I love food blog events but sometimes I have difficulty keeping track!
Magazine Mondays is more of a self-help tactic than anything else. A few months ago, I wrote about taking a huge step in letting go of so many recipes that I’d had for years and never tried. In my ongoing efforts to actually cook and bake rather than store recipes for all eternity, I came up with Magazine Mondays as a way to do that.
When possible, I’ll post a recipe (always on a Monday) from a magazine. I figure this will help me to actually get into the kitchen and try all those recipes that I’ve bookmarked.
If you’re interested in joining me, please do. This is a completely informal thing that I hope will help me to continue to manage all those magazine purchases!
For my inaugural Magazine Monday, I chose a recipe from the February 2007 issue of Gourmet Traveller. When I saw the cover of the magazine with a beautiful Zucchini and Feta Tart with Roasted Cherry Tomatoes, I just had to buy it. And finally … I tried it! It was well worth it, too.
Welcome to Magazine Mondays! Have a great week everyone!
Ciao!

Valvona & Crolla: A Year at an Italian Table by Mary Contini.

Have you ever read a cookbook that brings tears to your eyes? Tears of joy for all the beautiful food in the world that can be made. That would be this book. Love it.

Good for you! I have so many magazines and clipped recipes that I know I’ll never get around to making them all. And keeping up with them is such a challenge for me!
10/15/07 at 8:19 pm
That’s such a great idea. I have an enormous backlog of magazine recipes!
10/15/07 at 8:33 pm
I somehow never buy foodie magazines but cookbooks….don’t even ask! Probably be cheaper if I stuck to magazines, huh?
10/15/07 at 8:47 pm
Fun idea. I am currently obsessed with Fine Cooking Magazine!
10/15/07 at 8:49 pm
Sounds like a great way to get cooking! Can’t wait to see your creations on Mondays! This tart looks very flaky….delicious!
10/15/07 at 8:57 pm
Your tart looks so yummy!!! I just want to dig right in!!
10/15/07 at 10:30 pm
[…] came across this post - Introducing … Magazine Mondays! - and thought it was worth sharing. I hope you find it interesting too and take the time to read […]
10/16/07 at 3:48 am
This is a great idea! Just yesterday, I was going through a stack of magazines and putting post-it notes on them of the recipes that I want to try.
10/16/07 at 4:37 am
Great idea, Ivonne. I look forward to your Monday cooking adventures.
10/16/07 at 6:09 am
I like how you left the stem on the tomatoes. Gives it a rustic look. Can we eat it now?
10/16/07 at 6:46 am
Hi,
your blog is wonderful!Compliments!
10/16/07 at 6:48 am
What a wonderful idea! Maybe this will give me the motivation to try the many recipes I have tagged in my magazines!! Thanks!! Your tart is beautiful by the way:)
10/16/07 at 6:49 am
Actually on my post right now is a recipe from a magazine. Unfortunately I cut it out so long ago I don’t remember what magazine it is from.
But that tart is mouth watering. Do you think you could have it to me here by my lunchtime?
10/16/07 at 7:01 am
That is such a great idea! I keep a whole binder full of magazine recipes and try to get to making some of them. This one looks great!
10/16/07 at 7:18 am
Great idea! I’m not a food blogger but this may be the inspiration I need to make my way through all those untried saved recipes.
10/16/07 at 8:29 am
I love the idea, I do have a lot of magazines that I read but don’t always use. However monday isn’t a good night for me but I will do my best!
10/16/07 at 10:51 am
Hi,
I found you today quite by chance. I am a wannabe food blogger, just getting started at it. Your site is lovely and inspires me to keep at it. I live in south Florida, but my family is in Niagara on the Lake. I’ll be stopping back if that’s ok.
10/16/07 at 11:18 am
ooh Magazine Mondays sounds fun!! This tomato tart looks like a great way to kick off the event :0)
10/16/07 at 12:01 pm
Ivonne, I remember well when you were debating what to do with all your stored up recipes from magazines, and this is a fabulous idea! Gorgeous tart.
10/16/07 at 1:52 pm
Ivonne that is really beautiful. I’m so grateful I wasn’t traveling then and didn’t spot that mag. Now I have the recipe and not the mag. I only buy magazines when I travel - some strange idea that I won’t accumulate so many that way.
Neat idea for Monday!
10/16/07 at 2:57 pm
Great idea! Can’t wait to see what you cook up.
10/16/07 at 2:58 pm
I know what you mean about the magazines, okay I will get rid of a couple —if I can…LOL! Another great recipe! I am going to need a diet if I keep visiting here:-)
10/16/07 at 3:22 pm
That is a great idea! I just might already be following your lead! I tested a recipe yesterday that I’ve been meaning to try. While much simpler than your gorgeous tart, it was something I had been craving for awhile, and it actually turned out pretty disastrous.
10/16/07 at 5:02 pm
What a great idea!
Even with my purge of older magazines, I still have a huge backlog of others with knotched pages, waiting for me to try.
10/16/07 at 5:22 pm
Very cool concept. I too have many magazines and books saved in my cabinets that I have never used a recipe from. It such a shame too. You have given a great challenge.
10/16/07 at 5:54 pm
This looks SO good! What a great idea…I need to do the same but feel like I wouldn’t be able to keep it up.
10/16/07 at 6:48 pm
This is such a good idea Ivonne! And I definitely could use a little push to get to all those recipes I have bookmarked in my magazines!
Hope to join you one of these Mondays
That tart indeed looks more than worth it…it’s gorgeous!
10/16/07 at 7:21 pm
Does this mean you won’t be entering a sustainable seafood recipe in my first blog event?
I have never gotten on top of all the magazines and the recipes I’m saving them for seem to get lost. Do you actually throw out the magazine and cut/keep the recipe? Has anyone gone completely paperless? I’m waiting for a perfect solution and my coffee table and desk are, as ever, groaning under the weight of all those great ideas I was going to post about, recipes I was going to try…

10/16/07 at 10:29 pm
Hi ! I am new at this blogging and your blog is amazing. I recently received my copy of Donna Hays and cant wait to try her recipes ! thanks for the opportunity !
10/17/07 at 3:04 am
Great idea!! I have a tonne of cooking magazines and have only attempted a small percentage of the recipes. I LOVE looking at them but getting around to cooking them is another thing.
The zuchinni and feta tart with roast cherry tomatoes looks delicious!! I am so going to have to try this myself.
10/17/07 at 4:32 am
This is a great idea, Ivonne! I may join you… although I’m going to have to include my fellow blogger’s recipes in the mix… I almost have more of those to try than magazine recipes! Looking forward to next Monday…
10/17/07 at 7:02 am
Inspired idea Ivonne, my magazine pile is in need of a cull, this will be just the thing to help thin it out a little!
10/17/07 at 9:04 am
Such a good idea, Ivonne, and Gourmet Traveller is a great first pick - that tart is so colorful!
10/17/07 at 10:37 am
I have a huge collection of magazines and thousands of recipes I want to try… This recipe gives me a good reason to buy this type of pan, I have been wanting to do it for a while and now, there are no more excuses.
10/17/07 at 5:03 pm
Oh, I love this idea! I have binders and binders full of untried recipes. Making an effort to work on them weekly would be a great thing!
10/18/07 at 5:16 am
What a wonderful idea, Ivonne!
And you’ve certainly started well - this tart is just superb!
10/18/07 at 7:35 am
Great Idea! I should try this with the stack that has taken over our bookcase in our tiny tiny living room! eeks! This tart is so pretty - we made a similiar tart in a French Cooking class I took over the weekend … simple and yummy!
10/18/07 at 11:12 am
It is a great idea and I certainly want to participate. I find it so difficult to give away my magazines but I really have to downsize my magazine stash!
10/18/07 at 3:40 pm
Smart. Very smart.
10/18/07 at 5:28 pm
What a great idea! I have a bit of a food magazine buying obsession and there are still countless recipes I have not tried out. This might be the time to do it!
Your tart looks great by the way.

10/18/07 at 6:16 pm
I always purchase a magazine with the very best of intentions and promises about making some of the dishes that made me purchase it in the first place. My stack is getting quite large of recipes still waiting. This might give me the motivation to get started.
10/18/07 at 7:19 pm
YUM! What a great idea. I’m constantly in awe of recipes in Food & Wine, or my new fav, Taste of Italia, but don;t seem to make my way into the kitchen to execute one. Great inspiration!
10/18/07 at 10:19 pm
Fantastic idea! I’m glad to see that I am not alone in collecting an obscene amount of recipes… enough for lifetimes.
10/18/07 at 11:48 pm
hhmmmm…that’s an excellent idea!
I better go home and try this too!
10/19/07 at 7:37 am
Great idea. And this first one is a winner. All my magazines have stickers sticking out of them, marking the potential recipes, only to be stacked in my “when I have the time” heap…

Hi,
I can’t see a beautiful tart without stopping to comment! I adore feta cheese. Great little tart pan, and I love how you left the tomatoes on the vine…a classic Ivonne touch:)

10/19/07 at 3:36 pm
This is a great idea, Ivonne! Food magazines are so addictive, and it would be nice to make more of the recipes we like from them, as opposed to just gazing at the pages!
10/21/07 at 3:10 pm
Food and Wine. Gourmet. Cooking Light. Fine Cooking. Donna Hay. Everyday Food. Eating Well. Bon Appetit.
Yeah, count me in… at least on the occasional Monday.

It is good to know that there are others out there who have made a commitment to do something with all of the magazine recipes that gravitate toward people like us!
I had piles of food magazines that I did not want to toss out because I knew there were amazing ideas in them. I swore I would not buy another magazine until I went through at least one of them and tried at least one recipe.
I ended up pulling out all the recipes I wanted to try, filing them by catagories and now that I have three large file drawers of recipes, I have committed to pulling a file every week and making something from it. Your Monday idea is a great one, and I will look forward to adding that on to my menu of the week’s search for something interesting to serve.
Thanks and Bon Appetite!
