Can You Say Tortoni?

tortoni-1border.jpg

A few weeks ago, as I began hearing about people’s plans for Father’s Day, it occurred to me that ever since my father passed away in 2001, we’ve been spending Father’s Day in our own special way.

Now neither Father’s Day nor Mother’s Day were ever huge days in my family. My father always said that every day should be Mother’s Day and every day should be Father’s Day so while my parents always appreciated our little gifts and well wishes, they instilled in us the belief that honouring your parents is something you should do all the time.

I guess that’s why Father’s Day has never been a particularly tough day for us. It’s not that we don’t think about him, it’s just that we spend the day the way we always spent it even when he was alive: together enjoying a nice meal.

When I received the June issue of Gourmet magazine, I came across a feature by Gina Marie Miraglia Eriquez called “Sear Delight”. The entire menu is prepared on the grill and is also Italian-themed. This being Italian June, I thought that I might take it upon myself to prepare the entire menu!

So for this edition of Magazine Mondays, I give you the following treats:

Grilled Pancetta-Wrapped Asparagus

pancetta-asparagus.jpg

Love pancetta. Love asparagus. Enough said.

Caramelized-Onion and Gorgonzola Grilled Pizza

grill-pizza.jpg

This was my first time preparing a grilled pizza and I loved it. I was amazed at how quickly it cooked. I was so afraid that the ingredients would spill over, though, that I was a bit ungenerous. Next time I’ll be piling on that gorgonzola dolce for sure!

Grilled Veal Chops with Arugula and Basil Salad

fathers-day-meal-020.jpg

We grill veal chops all the time but this is the first time that we pounded the meat so thinkly. They were so tender! And the arugula and basil salad was a nice touch although I had to augment it with romaine lettuce as our arugula is just coming in so there wasn’t enough for a full salad.

Grilled Baby Artichokes with Caper-Mint Sauce

grill-artichokes.jpg

Prepping the artichokes was a total pain in the butt, however, it was worth it. These were the hit of the day and that caper-mint sauce had us all licking our fingers.

Acini di Pepe Pasta with Garlic and Olives

acini-di-pepe.jpg

Some of us liked this pasta salad with the couscous-like acini di pepe and some of us didn’t. I loved it. It was garlicky and spicy but if I make it again I might add in some herbs for more of a flavour impact.

Stracciatella Tortoni Cake with Espresso Fudge Sauce

tortoni-2.jpg

Hello, Tortoni! This was a cross between an ice cream cake and heaven. I loved it so much that I’ve already decided I’m making it for a big family BBQ that we’re having in a few weeks. And that sauce … oh, that sauce!!!

Have a great week, everyone!

Ciao!

It all loks so very good…especially the cross between ice cream and hevean.

What a feast and the piste d’resistance, the tortoni! Yumm.

06/16/08 at 3:48 am

I think next Father’s Day I will come to your house and join your family — what a feast!

06/16/08 at 5:02 am

Wow, what a spread…looks absolutely fantastic. My tummy is rumbling as I type. That asparagus looks delicious and the tortoni…wow!

Anche nella mia famiglia non si è mai festeggiata la festa della mamma (seconda domenica di maggio) e la festa del papà (19 aprile - san Giuseppe). Anche i miei genitori hanno sempre detto che ogni giorno deve essere festeggiato. Buonissimi i tuoi piatti… e quella torta gigante… “tortona” è favolosa.
Ciao.

What a feast! And to think I almost bought that magazine but I didn’t because I have sooo many others…
Every dish looks aboslutely delicious and those artichokes!

May parents also didn’t pay attention to Mother’s Day and Father’s Day because they too thought parents should be honoured every day.

Great post and great pictures Ivonne. I am going to buy that magazine right now!

ciao..

“they instilled in us the belief that honouring your parents is something you should do all the time.” my parents taught me the same thing - I believe that mothers and fathers should be celebrated each and every day!!

although everything looks delicious (as always), that Tortoni cake is calling my name!! :0D

06/16/08 at 7:09 am

I made the tortoni a few weeks ago too and loved it!

Ivonne: Of course I recognize that Tortoni recipe from the Gourmet issue just received and I thought it looked to so totally awesome…And I also think that asparagus and pancetta recipe looks amazing, too. I’m going to go through my magazines today and see what I can make! Hopefully I’ll have a post up later today. I’ll let you know.

Everything looks delicious! I agree with your dad: Everyday should be Mother’s and Father’s day. ;-)

Yum, Ivonne! Everything looks equally delicious!

06/17/08 at 10:24 am

I am not sure I can find amaretti for the Tortoni. Any alternatives for the crust?

06/17/08 at 8:33 pm

Beautiful photos. It all looks amazing! I love grilling pizzas. It has become a regular dinner at our house. Don’t you love how crunchy the crust gets? Mmm…

06/18/08 at 6:34 am

Wow! You’ve been busy! I can’t decide which one to try first! :)

p.s. I’ve tagged you!

06/18/08 at 3:49 pm

Re: everyday being Mother’s/Father’s Day–I feel the same way about Valentine’s Day…I used to work in a card shop and it was quite obvious when people were only paying attention to (whomever) because of the calendar.

Your menu looks delicious.

Wow! Love the idea for Magazine Mondays. I’ll be going through my mags this week!

06/19/08 at 10:43 am

OMG. You made the whole menu. You’re such a stud! I’ve made all but the artichokes and tortoni. We loved the pizza, and I used pork instead of veal…Mmmm…your photos are gorgeous and it’s making me want it all over again!

06/19/08 at 5:00 pm

I cook dinner, complete with dessert every Sunday and have my parents over. I love doing it but one Sunday I would love to sit at your table for these fabulous meals! Awesome job, as usual.

I have always wanted to partake in your magazine Mondays, thought it was a great idea. I think I may join you for a few!

Stracciatella Tortoni Cake with Espresso Fudge Sauce..?? Good grief, do I ever want to reach through the screen and grab some! I can almost smell it….(drooling).

Ivonne ~ Such a wonderful, summery spread! It is wonderful to be so inspired. I have to say that it seems Gourmet has lifted its game. I’ve been quite pleasantly surprised by the quality of the new format this year (last year, it seems that they were still finding their way). It must be said - the tortoni looks incredible. I’ve bookmarked this recipe for summer (North American summer, for I’m heading to LA in August).

06/22/08 at 8:55 am

Considering I’ve never heard of tortoni before today, it seems to have inexplicably become my favourite word all of a sudden. I just can’t explain it…

06/22/08 at 12:29 pm

What a feast :o) such unique food, too. I would have liked to sample everything!! Hope you’re having a great weekend, Ivonne!

Tortoni! Tortoni! I can’t stop saying it now! Will I get some if I say it enough? :)

Magazine Mondays sounds like fun, I’ll try to get in on it next week. Thanks for the great idea!

06/24/08 at 4:03 pm

That was just not enough food for one post. Really, you’re getting awfully lazy. I kid of course! Seriously, I’m exhausted just thinking about making that many dishes for one blog post. Bravo!

I’ve now made the tortoni TWICE for company and it is such an amazingly delicious dessert. I ate all the leftover sauce myself, just a spoonful a day. For the person who couldn’t find amaretti, I found some at our local World Market (Cost Plus) or your local Co-Op might have them.
