I always heed Cath’s call.
Whenever she asks if I want to participate in a book event, I’m there.
Especially when the author of the book is someone like Deborah Madison. Some people are born to write cookbooks and Deborah is one of those people.
Her latest cookbook, Seasonal Fruit Desserts: From Orchard, Farm, and Market, is another example of Madison’s ability.
The hardest part for me was getting over the unfairness of not being able to try so many of the tempting berry recipes because we are nowhere near berry season here.
The book covers all fruits, but I have pretty much had my fill of apples. Thankfully, though, Ontario rhubarb has begun to make its appearance this spring so I didn’t feel too badly.
What to say about the book?
It’s beautiful. It’s imaginative. It has depth.
I am relatively new to rhubarb but I love it. The recipe for Baked Rhubarb with Vanilla, Orange, and Clove immediately caught my eye so I couldn’t resist.
I cannot explain how happy I was as the gentle perfume of baking sugar, rhubarb and vanilla filled the kitchen.
I was even happier when I enjoyed the baked rhubarb alongside some five-grain cereal for breakfast.
The rhubarb will keep me happy until the berries arrive.
The book will make me happy every time.
Ciao!

This looks really lovely! And I think the pairing with cereal is just perfect. I actually just posted a rhubarb recipe (with vanilla and orange) too!

Rhubarb is huge in MN – it grows wild on the side of highways! I love the pairing you diid ith the cereal. I use it as a side for meats. I love the infusion of some vanilla with the sweet-tart. And it’s always stunning. I was perusing through Deborah Madison’s books yesterday – yes, she’s on a list.

I am in love with her new book too! At first, I thought it was too simple. Some of the recipes aren’t even really…well, recipes…they are just ideas. But who better to get ideas from than Deborah? I went to her book signing in Napa too! Isn’t she sweet at book signings? π

I have some of that Red River multi grain cereal in my pantry. I have not made it yet…. why? I dunno. Once I try it I am sure I will like it. But you have really got me thinking because I just happened to have made some strawberry rhubarb compote today. Very nice idea there.

This is a gorgeous way to prepare rhubarb! I loved this cookbook as well and definitely regret that berries aren’t more in season at the moment. Ah well, in a month or two!

i haven’t started my rhubarb frenzy this year yet, but the first thing i’ll do is roast some as you suggest… never tried it before, but it#s got to be done!
